Built from things you already own

A convincing pirate costume needs surprisingly little that is actually pirate-specific. A loose white or cream shirt (a plain button-down works), dark trousers rolled to mid-calf, a wide belt or a sash tied at the waist, and boots or dark shoes gets you most of the way. Add a bandana tied over the hair and roll up your sleeves. The walk and the talk do the rest of the work; the outfit only has to suggest the idea, not recreate a film set.

A proper costume

For a full look, add a tricorn hat, a long coat or waistcoat, an eye patch, a wide leather-look belt with a prop sword or cutlass, and boot covers or actual boots. A few well-chosen accessories read as "proper pirate" faster than an entire matching costume set.

Kids' version

Keep it simple and comfortable: a striped top, an eye patch, a bandana, and a soft foam sword if any sword at all. Avoid anything with small hard parts or a real edge. A cheap hat and a plastic hook are usually enough for a young child to feel fully transformed.

Accessories that do the most work

If you only buy one or two things, buy these. An eye patch instantly reads as "pirate" from across a room, and a tricorn hat or a bandana finishes the silhouette without any effort.
